East End Beach Restoration
In early 2024, over one million cubic yards of beach quality sand has been placed on Dauphin Island’s East End, extending 1.5 miles west from Fort Gaines. Dredged material from 1.5 miles southwest of the Sand Island Lighthouse was pumped over 4.8 miles to Dauphin Island’s east end. Dunes along the project were created to protect the Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island Sea Lab property, Audubon Bird Sanctuary, and infrastructure along portions of the east end. The project was extensively planted with 691,000 native plants to help stabilize the new beach and dune habitat. Monitoring and adaptive Management will continue for three years to gauge project performance.
